1 / 2Overview
What is Anja?
One developer. An entire engineering team, on Claude Code.
Anja is the engineering system one developer built around Claude Code while shipping a production web app between March and October 2026, now extracted, cleaned and open sourced under Apache 2.0 for others to study, use and adapt.
Claude Code supplies the primitives — sub-agents, skills, hooks and memory. Anja adds the discipline between them: who delegates to whom, how sessions share one branch, who reviews what, how a session recovers after a compaction, and how a correction becomes a lesson, a rule, then a guard.
Copy the system into your own repository (there is no installer or plugin) and it sets up a lead session that briefs and dispatches 33 domain expert sub-agents — security, QA, UX and more — to execute work in parallel. Changes are reviewed by agents that did not write the code, and a second session can run /review-hub to review every session's commits. Corrections and decisions persist across sessions: a lesson is written down, becomes a rule applied to every session, and is enforced by a guard script. 63 hook scripts warn or block dangerous shell commands, pushes to production branches and writes containing secret patterns — the decision always stays with you.
Free, open source, no paid tiers. Built on macOS; hook tests also ran on Linux.

Anja Key Features
Lead session with 33 expert sub-agents
Describe the work to a lead session; it briefs and dispatches security, QA, UX and other domain experts to execute in parallel.
Independent code reviews
Changes are reviewed by agents that did not write the code; a second session can run /review-hub to review every session's commits at once.
Persistent memory across sessions
Corrections and decisions survive sessions. A lesson written down becomes a rule applied to every session, then a guard that enforces it (Act, Note, Judge, Apply cycle).
Safety guard hooks
63 hook scripts warn or block dangerous shell commands, pushes to production branches and writes containing secret patterns — the decision stays with you.
Multi-session branch coordination
Multiple sessions share one branch in one checkout, coordinating commits through safe-commit.sh and inter-session mail.

Common questions
Anja FAQs
What is Anja, and how do I install it?
Anja is an open-source engineering system that runs on top of Claude Code — a collection of rules, memory files, hooks, scripts and 33 expert sub-agents. There is no plugin or installer: you copy it into your repository and use it there.
Is Anja free?
Anja is completely free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license. There are no paid tiers and no trial concept — the repository is public, so you copy it into your project and start using it.
What environment does Anja require?
You need Claude Code plus git 2.31+, bash, Python 3, jq and Node.js. Anja was built on macOS and its hook tests also ran on Linux; Windows has not been tried. It runs in the Claude Code terminal, not as a web or mobile app.
Is it safe to let Anja's hooks run on my machine?
Hooks are scripts that run locally with your own user permissions. The README advises enabling them only in repositories you trust. Built-in hooks such as scan-secrets-writes warn when a write contains secret-like patterns, and dangerous commands, production pushes and secret writes can be warned on or blocked.
