Dots are OpenAI's always-on agents, announced at DevDay on September 29, 2026. A dot is a persistent agent inside ChatGPT with its own cloud computer and browser, powered by GPT-6 Astra. Give it an ongoing responsibility and it keeps working between conversations — connecting to 4,000+ apps through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem, doing background research with read-only tools, and messaging you in ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams when it needs input.
Safety is built around control: Custom Rules decide what a dot may do alone versus what needs approval, auto-review screens consequential actions, and an Activity View shows background work. Rolling out first to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets (Enterprise beta via admin), the first dot is included at no extra cost, with teams of dots planned later.

Does talking to my dot use up my ChatGPT limits?
No. OpenAI says conversations with your dot don't count toward your ChatGPT usage limits. Tasks your dot hands off into Codex or ChatGPT Work count toward those products' limits as usual.
Is it safe to give a dot access to my apps?
You choose which apps a dot can access. Custom Rules let you allow, require approval for, or block actions; auto-review screens consequential actions; and certain sensitive tasks, like changing a password, always stay with you.
Can I have more than one dot?
At launch each eligible user gets one primary dot. OpenAI says teams of dots working together are planned for the future.
