Open-source, model-agnostic AI coding agent that plans and executes multi-step development tasks in your editor.

Cline homepage — open coding agent
Overview
What is Cline?
The open coding agent — every model, every editor, your rules.
Cline is an open-source (Apache 2.0) AI coding agent that goes beyond autocomplete: it reads your codebase, creates and edits files, runs terminal commands, and follows a plan-then-act loop with approval gates before each action.
It runs as a VS Code extension, a native desktop app for macOS/Windows/Linux, a terminal CLI, in JetBrains IDEs (early access), or embedded in your own product via SDK. Cline works with practically any model — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure, AWS Bedrock, DeepSeek, xAI, Mistral, OpenRouter, local models via Ollama, and any OpenAI-compatible API — and you can switch models mid-task.
Notably, Cline's v4.1.22 release (September 30, 2026) set GPT-6.1 Sol as the default model across OpenAI, OpenRouter, GitHub Copilot, and other routed providers unless you pin a different model.
Cline itself is completely free to use — you bring your own model API key and pay only for token usage. An optional ClinePass subscription ($9.99/month) provides access to stable open-weight models without managing your own keys.

Common questions
Cline FAQs
Is Cline really free?
Yes. Cline itself is free and open source (Apache 2.0); you only pay your chosen model provider for token usage. An optional $9.99/month ClinePass subscription covers stable open-weight models if you prefer not to bring your own API key.
Which models can Cline use?
Practically any: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure, AWS Bedrock, DeepSeek, xAI, Mistral, OpenRouter, Ollama for local models, and any OpenAI-compatible API. You can even switch models in the middle of a task.
Where does Cline run?
As a VS Code extension (VS Code Marketplace and Open VSX), a native desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, a terminal CLI, in JetBrains IDEs (early access), or embedded in your own product via the SDK.
How is Cline different from autocomplete tools?
It acts as an agent rather than a completer: it reads your codebase, edits files across the project, runs terminal commands, and follows a plan-then-act loop with approval gates before taking each action.
Does Cline support GPT-6.1 Sol?
Yes. Since v4.1.22 (September 30, 2026), GPT-6.1 Sol is the default model for OpenAI, OpenRouter, GitHub Copilot, and other routed providers unless you pin a different model.
