Codex docs — getting started
1 / 2Overview
What is Codex?
Build anything with Codex — move faster and bring your biggest ideas to life.
Codex is OpenAI's AI coding agent for real engineering work: fixing hard-to-find bugs, complex refactors, new feature development, and automated pull-request review.
It works in three connected places — a cloud agent in ChatGPT on the web, an IDE extension, and a command-line tool (npm i -g @openai/codex) — all linked through your ChatGPT account, so the same agent follows you everywhere you code. Cloud tasks keep running after you close your laptop, with reusable cloud environments per repository.
Codex supports parallel multi-agent workflows: several agents can work at once, verify their work with computer and browser tools, and you review the results in one place.
Codex is included in ChatGPT plans rather than sold separately: Plus ($20/month), Pro ($100/month), and Business ($20/user/month), with Enterprise and Edu plans also covered. GPT-6.1 Sol is available in Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users, and an upcoming Ultrafast inference tier promises up to 8x faster token generation in Codex.

Common questions
Codex FAQs
What is Codex?
OpenAI's AI coding agent for engineering work — fixing bugs, refactoring, building features, and reviewing pull requests. It runs in ChatGPT on the web, as an IDE extension, and as a command-line tool, all connected through your ChatGPT account.
Do I need to pay extra for Codex?
No separate purchase: Codex is included in ChatGPT plans — Plus at $20/month, Pro at $100/month, Business at $20/user/month — with different usage allowances per plan. Enterprise and Edu plans are also covered.
Which platforms does Codex support?
ChatGPT on the web and desktop apps (including Linux), the Codex IDE extension, the Codex CLI (installed via npm), and the Codex cloud environment.
Can I use GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex?
Yes. OpenAI's announcement confirms GPT-6.1 Sol is available in Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users. It is not yet available in regular ChatGPT chat.
Do Codex tasks stop when I close my computer?
No. Codex runs in the cloud, so tasks continue after you close your laptop. Each repository gets a reusable cloud environment, and you can check progress from another device.
