What is Whiteboard?
the open-source IDE for thoughtful software design
Whiteboard is an open-source desktop IDE for thoughtful software design, built for engineers collaborating with AI coding agents. Instead of scrolling through thousand-line agent diffs by hand, it lets you visualize changes at the architecture level — sequence diagrams, DB relationship graphs — and verify that what you or your agent decided was actually executed.
Key capabilities:
- Architectural diff visualization — See diffs as sequence diagrams and DB relationship graphs, not just line-by-line text.
- Semantic AST-based diff engine — A Rust-powered diff engine that understands code structure; long algorithms appear as pseudocode, signatures always shown.
- Agent trajectory audits — Verify the decisions made by you and your coding agents were carried out correctly.
- MCP integration — Connects to any MCP-capable coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, and others).
whiteboardCLI + explicit sharing — Install once, then ask your agent to review changes; share reviews via explicit immutable copy links.
Whiteboard is free and MIT-licensed, available for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows, and Linux. Shared copies can be viewed in a browser. Reviews are stored locally; a hosted team version is coming soon.

Whiteboard Key Features
Architecture-level diff visualization
See diffs as sequence diagrams and DB relationship graphs instead of scrolling thousand-line text diffs.
Semantic AST-based diff engine
Rust-powered diff engine that understands code structure; long algorithms appear as pseudocode, signatures always shown.
Agent trajectory audits
Verify that decisions made by you and your coding agents were actually carried out as intended.
MCP integration
Connects to any MCP-capable coding agent such as Claude Code and Codex.
CLI and explicit sharing
Install the `whiteboard` CLI once and ask your agent to review; share reviews through explicit immutable copy links.

Common questions
Whiteboard FAQs
Is Whiteboard really free?
Yes — Whiteboard is open source under the MIT license and free to download and use. A hosted team version is listed as coming soon on the site.
Which platforms does it run on?
macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel via .dmg or Homebrew cask), Windows (x64 .exe), and Linux (Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch). Shared copies can be viewed in any web browser.
Which AI coding agents does it work with, and how do I start?
Any MCP-capable coding agent, such as Claude Code and Codex. Whiteboard installs its `whiteboard` command into your agent; after restarting it you just ask it to review your current branch against main.
What happens to my code and data?
Reviews are stored locally on your machine (~/.dev/) and sharing is explicit — nothing leaves your machine unless you create an immutable copy link. Trace collection is off by default; anonymized telemetry is on by default but can be disabled by setting DO_NOT_TRACK=1.
